5 Everyday Somatic Practices to Reduce Stress and Overwhelm

April 08, 20251 min read

When life feels overwhelming, it’s easy to get stuck in your head. But your body offers a way out. Somatic practices help shift you from stress to balance by working with sensation, movement, and breath. Here are five simple practices you can use every day:

  1. Grounding: Stand barefoot on the earth or press your feet firmly into the floor, noticing the support beneath you.

  2. Box Breathing: Inhale for 4, hold for 4, exhale for 4, hold for 4—repeat to calm your nervous system.

  3. Shaking: Gently shake out your arms and legs for 30 seconds to release tension and reset your body.

  4. Butterfly Hug: Cross your arms over your chest and tap gently, alternating hands, to bring a sense of safety.

  5. Orienting: Slowly scan your environment, noticing colours, textures, and objects to ground yourself in the present.

These small shifts help interrupt stress patterns to create a sense of safety and balance in your body—no matter what’s happening in your day.
